pond update, and slasher in action!

As promised, here's some more pictures of the pond:




It's actually filled up some more since, but these are the latest pictures. We also dug out a little around the souce of the spring, just to see where it came from:


After an hour or so, the water had cleared:


and if you look closely, you can see the hole where the water is welling up from:


The other thing we did on Saturday was to use the newly sharpened slasher, blade pictured here:


As you can see, it is one of my favourite tools:


I got to work attacking some bracken next to our parking spot in the wayleave:




... with the end result that an old track is now open again:


This will also let light get down to the ground and give some other varieties of plant life than bracken a chance to grow. We're pondering cutting a variety of paths through the bracken, and also through the brambles - to allow blackberry picking, as well as promoting variety of plantlife.

While cutting the bracken I discovered an old bird nest, which must have been used this spring, as the bracken grows up fresh each year:


Any ideas what kind of bird likes to nest in bracken, about 40cm off the ground?
